Messerly wastewater plant celebrates 5 years of perfect environmental record AUGUSTA, Ga., April 23, 2008—For 60 consecutive months, the James B. Messerly Water Pollution Control Plant has maintained perfect compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System—setting a new record for the facility. The NPDES permit program regulates the quality of water discharged into public lakes, rivers and other water bodies. Wastewater plants have to remove solid materials and also treat the water for ammonia and maintain correct amounts of dissolved oxygen. “This important milestone is a tremendous accomplishment for everyone involved in operating and maintaining the wastewater plant,” says Mark Andrews, project manager for CH2M HILL OMI, which has operated and maintained the Messerly plant since 1999. “Providing solutions that help enhance the environment and protect public health is at the heart of what we do.” The Augusta-Richmond County Commission selected CH2M HILL OMI to provide operations and maintenance at the 46.2 million-gallons-per-day facility after the state’s strict regulations regarding ammonia required additional expertise. Beginning in April 2003, new techniques have helped the facility remain in perfect compliance with the ammonia regulations and other NPDES rules. During the five-year run, the wastewater plant also earned several awards from the Georgia Association of Water Professionals and the National Association of Clean Water Agencies for perfect compliance, outstanding operations and Safety. “Our compliance record is due to the hard work every day of our employees and the great support we receive from the Augusta-Richmond County Commissioners. We’ve made several changes to the facility to increase compliance, and they’ve been with us every step of the way,” Andrews says. The wastewater plant is undergoing a $70 million expansion that will improve its capability to continue complying with ever-evolving regulations. Clients in government and industry rely on the people of CH2M HILL OMI to provide a range of custom-tailored operations and maintenance solutions.
