Employees discuss water at Georgia school career day
CH2M HILL employees in Hinesville, Ga., have been involved with Button Gwinnett Elementary School for many years. Earlier this month, as part of the school’s annual career day fair for first- to fifth-grade students, Terrell Richardson and Don Patterson spoke with approximately 700 students. They showed students examples of water before it entered the city’s wastewater treatment plant and how clean it was after. They also talked about how treating wastewater conserves drinking water and gave the students tips on how they could conserve water. Students were given pencils and “water saver” stickers to remind them to conserve. CH2M HILL began providing services to the City of Hinesville’s 7.15-mgd wastewater treatment plant in 1984. In 1992, the City selected CH2M HILL for comprehensive management of its entire 100-person public works department, including utilities.

Water service providers deliver annual report to Congressional leaders
Approximately 50 leaders from the private water service sector, including CH2M HILL, once again gathered on Capitol Hill to discuss water infrastructure issues with Congress members and their staffs as part of the National Association of Water Companies’ Annual Report to Congressional Leaders. Key NAWC policy recommendations include:

  • Support legislation to expand the use and availability of tax-exempt financing for water projects. It is estimated that by removing existing restrictions to this financing, $5-6 billion in private capital would be unlocked to be deployed toward water infrastructure projects.
  • Reauthorize the Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund and enable private water service providers to extend much-needed wastewater solutions and service to under-served communities and non-compliant system.
  • Consider the development of an infrastructure bank that would act as a real bank and encourage public-private partnerships.

Our people

One man’s trash is another man’s … art
Richard Martinez, a maintenance mechanic in Rio Rancho, N.M., not only enjoys creating art he’s pretty good at it. Using what most people might consider trash, Richard collects disposed items and turns them into something beautiful. Offering to use his talents to create a work of art for Administrative Specialist Angie Bussell, Richard added some character to the wastewater treatment plant’s office walls. With discarded gears, pieces of wire, and leftover scrap metal, Richard created a unique view of the New Mexico skyline. CH2M HILL provides operations and maintenance services for the City of Rio Rancho’s water and wastewater utilities.

Elisa M. Speranza
President’s perspective

“What is wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it; what is right is still right, even if no one else is doing it."
- William Penn

At CH2M HILL, being ethical is not about checking the box or filling a form; it is who we are and how we do business. It is an integral part of our culture. CH2M HILL co-founders James Howland authored a book of simple principles, known fondly as The Little Yellow Book. It sits on everyone’s desk and has been translated into nine languages. It captures the values upon which our firm was founded, all of which are as relevant today as they ever were. The first entry deals with ethics and the importance of our reputation for our business. Jim says, “A good test to determine if a contemplated action is ethical is to ask, ‘would I want to see it in the headlines tomorrow morning?’”

Honesty, integrity, respect and trust are among our core values. They also are major reasons why our clients hire us to do their most important projects and stay with us over the years. As we strive to be one of the most respected and admired companies in our industry, we never take this for granted.

It takes more than simple rules to maintain sound ethical practices over the long haul — it requires commitment to what is right, a commitment that we reinforce every day. As we grow, expand our global presence, and increase the complexity of our business, we recognize that it is more important than ever to stay vigilant about ethics in everything we do. We’re not content with the status quo. We strive to keep our founding culture relevant in the ever-changing global environment of the 21st century.

What are ethics? There are many academic definitions. For us, it’s doing the right thing, every time, especially when nobody is looking. For the third time CH2M HILL has been designated as one of the 2011 World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute. We have been able to achieve this distinction by constantly examining our beliefs and conduct and by striving to ensure our company and our employees live up to those standards.

I am proud to work for a company that prizes ethics so highly. As with our commitment to safety, clients can rest assured that we carry ethical values with us to their projects every day. Prospective clients can be confident in negotiating with us. Vendors can trust our partnerships. The value of this distinction, to paraphrase the credit card commercial, is priceless.

Have a safe and wonderful month.

Respectfully,

Elisa M. Speranza
President
