Clients recognized with 2010 Partnership Awards
Our success depends on client partnerships, and this year’s recipients of the CH2M HILL Partnership Award exemplify this spirit of collaboration. Established in 2005, the Partnership Award recognizes clients who work with CH2M HILL to accomplish mutual goals. Criteria for selection include a personal commitment to people and safety, demonstrating a willingness to work through challenges as a team, and acting as a champion for partnerships. This year’s honorees are:

  • Patrick Bernal receiving CH2M HILL Partnership AwardPatrick Bernal, Facilities & Maintenance Manager, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, San Jose, Calif. – CH2M HILL has provided operations and maintenance services for Hitachi GST since December 2005. From initial startup through budget-necessitated contract revisions, Bernal – shown in photo at right with his award, accompanied by O&MBG President Elisa Speranza (right), and Hitatchi Project Manager Aasha Rudolfs -  has been a strong advocate of our partnership, helping bring innovation and improvement to the project and supporting a three-year contract renewal in 2009.

  • Tony Parrott, executive director, and Biju George, deputy director, Cincinnati (Ohio) Metropolitan Sewer District – CH2M HILL has worked on multiple projects for the MSD including development of the organization’s 2009-2011 Strategic Plan, an environmental sustainability report and other green initiatives. Parrott and George mirror our company’s values through their actions. They include our employees in the MSD’s mission, support their community and are a strong partner to schools and other important stakeholders.

NCPPP offers forums on water partnerships
NCPPP logoThe National Council for Public-Private Partnerships is hosting a series of forums for state officials to discuss how public-private partnerships can be a valuable tool in addressing water infrastructure needs and what is needed to move these projects ahead. At “The Future of Water Partnerships in the West,” held Sept. 28 in Phoenix, Ariz., officials discuss the state’s water and wastewater challenges, financing of water partnerships, and managing the complex nexus between water and energy. Presentations from “The Future of Water Partnerships in Virginia,” held in June, are available online. The NCPPP will hold its 2010 annual meeting and awards banquet Nov. 16-18 in Arlington, Va., where the education program includes a track on water.

Colorful murals send environmental message
Storm drain muralTeenagers in Coos Bay, Ore., let their creativity shine by painting colorful murals near storm drains to educate people about the dangers of dumping harmful substances near the drains, which empty directly into bay waters. The project was organized by Oregon Coast Community Action Adventure, a program that encourages Oregon coast teens to get involved in philanthropic work. The city’s wastewater facility operator for nearly 15 years, CH2M HILL provided the aspiring artists with the paint for their murals. Check out the video ORCCA shot of the teens in action.

Leader’s safety focus improves performance, earns award
Mark Zachary and Billy AmmonsIn 2007, regional business manager Billy Ammons (shown accepting the award from Health & Safety Director Mark Zachary, on left) accepted a challenge to improve project safety. Thanks to his committed leadership, eight CH2M HILL facilities are closer to achieving TargetZero – our goal of eliminating all safety hazards and violations. In the last three years, employees on his projects have steadily reduced safety incidents and recordable accidents from 25 and five, respectively, to only one incident in the first half of 2010 and zero recordable or days-away cases in almost two full years. In recognition of those efforts, Billy recently earned the Global OpCom Safety Award, CH2M HILL’s highest safety award. Starting his career in wastewater nearly 30 years ago as an operator, Billy has been with CH2M HILL for almost 24 years. Today he oversees projects in Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. Elisa Speranza, president of the Operations & Maintenance Business Group, called Ammons a “quiet leader who personifies the notion of an everyday hero.”

Headquartered near Denver, Colorado, USA, employee-owned CH2M HILL is a global leader in consulting, program management, design, construction, and operations for government, civil, industrial and energy clients. With US$6.3 billion in revenue and more than 23,500 employees, CH2M HILL is an industry-leading program management, construction management and design firm, as ranked by Engineering News-Record (2009). The firm’s work is concentrated in the areas of energy, water, transportation, environmental, nuclear and industrial facilities. The firm has long been recognized as a most-admired company and leading employer.

CH2M HILL partners with communities and companies to deliver a complete range of custom-tailored operations and maintenance solutions. Our sustainable O&M solutions include water and wastewater system optimization; contract O&M of water, wastewater and other utilities; facilities management; and complete municipal operations, including administration, public works and community development.

Elisa M. Speranza
President’s perspective

We recently held our annual Leadership Summit, where our managers and leaders gathered to share information and best practices, participate in critical training and recognize outstanding achievements.

This year’s theme, “Everyday Heroes,” shone a spotlight on the work our employees do every day behind the scenes. Whether it’s in water and wastewater treatment plants, facilities management or municipal government operations, our employees give their best every day to exceed our customers’ expectations and improve the environment and communities where they live and work. It’s often a thankless job, but the Summit is our opportunity to show our appreciation to these employees for their hard work and provide them with the tools to do an even better job for our clients in the future.

Our client focus even extends to involving them in the Summit. Larry Tarkowski, Town Manager for Prescott Valley, Ariz., provided an insightful luncheon presentation. We also celebrate our top clients with the CH2M HILL Partnership Award. This year we recognized Tony Parrott and Biju George from the Cincinnati Metropolitan Sewer District and Pat Bernal of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies for their commitment to achieving great results together through solid partnerships.

The success of our partnerships and projects is strengthened by our company’s commitment to safety. In fact, our projects have received 117 safety awards in recent years. We couldn’t achieve that level of success without employees like Billy Ammons, a regional business manager who recently was awarded the OpCom Health & Safety Award – the highest award given by our company. Through his quiet leadership and personal commitment to safety, Billy has helped eight client facilities significantly reduce safety incidents and recordables, bringing them closer to our goal of TargetZero.

As you go about your work and travels this month, be on the lookout for those everyday heroes who quietly go about making the world a better place. I’ll bet you’ll see them in more places than you can imagine.

Respectfully,

Elisa M. Speranza
President
