Three cheers for CH2M HILL
Underscoring the strength of CH2M HILL’s overall commitment to corporate citizenship, three independent programs recently recognized the firm’s sustainability, workplace and business practices. In Georgia, CH2M HILL achieved Silver Level partner status in the Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia, a state-sponsored, voluntary environmental leadership initiative. In Oregon, the firm was ranked one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon” by Oregon Business magazine, which determined winners through employee surveys and a company questionnaire about workplace policies. And top business magazine Fortune ranked CH2M HILL among the 2008 “America’s Most Admired Companies” in the engineering/construction category for the sixth consecutive year.

Our communities

Ask us for a tour!
CH2M HILL OMIIs your community’s water or wastewater system operated by CH2M HILL OMI? Have you ever visited the facilities to learn more about how water systems work? If not, give our local office a call – we’d love to show you around and describe what we do. Over the years we’ve collectively hosted thousands of tours for school groups, scout troops, and 4-H clubs like the girls pictured here, who recently visited Seattle Public Utilities’ Cedar River Water Treatment Plant in Renton, Wash., and learned about water treatment and testing. Facility tours help kids or adults better understand the water cycle, the importance of protecting watersheds, and so much more.

Service to Lebanon lands Distinguished Service Award nomination
CH2M HILL OMI people have been serving Lebanon, Ore., since 1982, operating and maintaining the city’s water and wastewater systems. In recognition of their long community commitment – including ensuring safe drinking water and clean waterways – the team was nominated for a Lebanon Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award last month.

Nominees are chosen based on factors such as employees who are active in the community, superior business practices, ethics and quality, leadership, a positive influence on their business and community, and advancement of education. CH2M HILL OMI did not take top honors in the “Small Business of the Year” category, but “it’s a tremendous honor to have been nominated among so many other great local businesses,” says Brian Helliwell, project manager.

Our partners

Magazine lauds clients for corporate citizenship
Some of our top industrial clients are also ranked among the country's top corporate citizens. A new list of America's “100 Best Corporate Citizens,” compiled each year by CRO Magazine, recognizes the corporate responsibility efforts of large public companies in eight categories: climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights, lobbying and philanthropy. Congratulations to our partners whose strong commitments to citizenship put them on the 2008 list, including PG&E and Dow Chemical Co. CH2M HILL OMI helps our various business clients with a range of industrial operations and maintenance services, such as operating industrial wastewater or groundwater treatment systems.

Safety spotlighted in DeFuniak Springs, Fla.
Check out the April issue of American Water Works Association’s Opflow magazine, which will feature a two-page story about the safety practices followed at the water and wastewater system in DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Public Works Director William Holloway co-authored the piece, along with Jayne Swift, CH2M HILL OMI project manager. The city shares four basic practices that help foster a successful, award-winning safety culture across utility operations. Most recently, the city won the Florida Water Environment Association’s Safety Award.

Prescott Valley, Ariz., shortlisted for ‘Deal of the Year’
Last year, the Town of Prescott Valley, Ariz., pioneered a successful program to auction the rights to effluent that comes from the town’s wastewater treatment plant. Their program has now been listed among the finalists in the Global Water Awards’ “Water Deal of the Year” category. Leading industry publication Global Water Intelligence sponsors the annual award program, and winners will be announced in April. More information about the Prescott Valley effluent auction project is on the Global Water Awards Web site. CH2M HILL OMI has operated and maintained the town’s wastewater plant for the past 15 years.

Our people

National conferences tap employee expertise
Four of our people were on center stage to share their knowledge and experience at two recent national conferences. In early February, employees Rob Kuta and Elliott Wheeler presented lessons in “incorporating environmental sustainability in your design-build project” at the Design-Build Institute of America’s water infrastructure conference in Atlanta, Ga.

Later in the month, Steve McNicol and Jeff Sanford, with other CH2M HILL employees, hosted a sold-out full-day workshop that presented strategic and tactical approaches to asset management with clients from Albany, Ore., and Pinellas County, Fla. The workshop was part of the Utility Management Conference in Tampa, Fla., jointly sponsored by the American Water Works Association and Water Environment Federation.

Operators, mechanics, managers... oh my
Our company was founded to help operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment systems. So it’s no surprise that operators make up more than 20 percent of our total work force of 1,650. But it might be harder to guess what are the next “most popular jobs” at CH2M HILL OMI. Here’s the answer:

  • Mechanics – 150 employees
  • Equipment operators – 115 employees
  • Project managers – 105 employees
  • Utility workers – 95 employees

As our business has grown to include delivering comprehensive municipal services, we’re adding lots of other jobs too, such as planners, code enforcement officers and transportation experts. In general, well over half of our work force is “out in the field” every day, working directly to serve the needs of our municipal and industrial clients.

Elisa M. Speranza
President’s perspective

In our business, we're more aware than most people about the importance of water, sewer, public works and basic municipal services. In North America, we generally take access to drinking water and sanitation services for granted.

But according to the most recent statistics from the World Health Organization, an estimated 1.1 billion people worldwide don’t have regular access to safe drinking water, and 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation facilities. Between the impacts of global climate change and an expanding world population, ensuring that everyone has access to basic clean water and sanitation systems will get even more difficult. A couple of years ago, I was part of a delegation from Water For People to Guatemala, and I saw first-hand the impact that clean water and sanitation can have on a community's quality of life. I came back from that trip pretty humbled – and more committed to being part of the solution.

The United Nations has declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation, and the U.N.’s World Water Day – held on March 22 every year – is a special day to draw particular attention to the importance of water and sanitation issues. The U.N. hopes that raising awareness with the public, politicians and other officials will lead “to decisive actions in support of improved sanitation.” The ultimate goal is to reduce by half the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015, and to provide potable water and improved sanitation to all communities by 2025.

During March, we invite you to join us in helping focus public attention on the critical infrastructure that supports the protection of public health and the environment. We're proud to be your partner in providing such important services to communities and companies.

Respectfully,

Elisa M. Speranza
President
