Construction under way on Clovis, Calif., water reuse plant
An innovative new water treatment and reuse facility will be coming on-line next year for Clovis, Calif., thanks to CH2M HILL’s integrated design-build-operate team. Construction for the 2.8-million-gallon-per-day Clovis Sewage Treatment-Water Reuse Facility is under way, as are CH2M HILL OMI’s plans to begin operating the facility in November 2008. We have a 10-year operations contract in place with an option to extend another five years. State-of-the-art wastewater treatment technologies will help the facility reduce its environmental footprint. For example, a membrane bioreactor will integrate liquid treatment and ultrafiltration solids separation, yielding high-quality water that can be reused for irrigation. In addition, the facility will be highly automated, requiring a smaller staff. Architectural features include prairie-style architecture, water features, and extensive landscaping to minimize visual impact.

Our services, strategies and sharing make news
We’re always appreciative when our services and expertise earn mentions by the media. Recent coverage about our services – water and wastewater system and staff optimization, contract operations and maintenance of utilities, and complete municipal operations – includes:

Golf tournament raises $4,000 for kids in Fort Lupton, Colo.
Our employees in Fort Lupton, Colo., and Denver teamed up in August to help organize and sponsor the City of Fort Lupton’s fifth annual fundraising golf tournament. The event raised about $4,000 this year to benefit the Fort Lupton Recreation Center’s youth activities program, which gives teenagers opportunities to participate in sports, educational activities, team-building activities and other events. CH2M HILL OMI has sponsored the tournament every year since its inception, and our people collectively donate about 400 volunteer hours annually. CH2M HILL OMI manages the city’s water and wastewater treatment systems.

New ‘green’ city hall opens in Johns Creek, Ga.
Just six months after incorporation, the City of Johns Creek has opened the doors to its first city hall – a two-floor interior space that’s functional and environmentally friendly. CH2M HILL OMI people strivJohns Creek City Halled to make conscious choices throughout the build-out process and to select, when possible, local vendors or vendors who proved to be leaders in innovative manufacturing. For example, they chose Sherwin-Williams paint that is a low-volatile organic compound product. The carpet comes from Georgia-based Shaw Industries Inc. and is made with post-consumer material. And The HON Company, an industry leader in innovative manufacturing using mostly salvaged metal or post-consumer materials, provided the office furniture. City hall houses all municipal operations and services, the mayor’s office and City Council chambers.

By the way, another kudos to Johns Creek for recently being recognized as one of America's “Top 25 Places to Live to Go to School,” by RelocateAmerica.com.

AWWA ad campaign for tap water earns national award
The American Water Works Association’s “Only Tap Water Delivers” campaign has earned the top award in the Society of National Association Publications 2007 EXCEL contest in the category of campaign advertisements. Expert operators to compete in ‘wastewater Olympics’
Already a two-time national champion in the Water Environment Federation’s annual Operations Challenge competition, Fluid Dynamics has qualified to compete at a national level again! The four Fluid Dynamics team members are CH2M HILL OMI’s Tabb Justis and Andy Rudd, who support client DuPont Spruance in Richmond, Va.; Donnie Cagle, a CH2M HILL OMI operations specialist in Franklin, Va.; and Steve Motley, from the CityFluid Dynamics of Virginia Beach Department of Public Utilities. Their coach is Elijah Smith, who also works for Virginia Beach. The team is pictured here along with their first-place regional competition prize. In addition, Mary Anne Peck, a CH2M HILL OMI operator in Biddeford, Maine, will be competing on a separate team called Force Maine. Held at WEFTEC Oct. 16, Ops Challenge showcases the skills of the nation’s best and brightest wastewater professionals, and teams are tested in five categories: maintenance, safety, laboratory analysis, process control and collections systems. In addition to supporting these teams, CH2M HILL OMI is a gold-level sponsor of Ops Challenge – just one of the ways we aim to help our industry continue to grow and to give back to the operator community.
President’s perspective
As kids around the country are getting into “back to school” mode this month, it is a good time for our company to focus some of our attention on “back to basics” as well. So whether our people are busy running a wastewater plant, delivering city services, or doing something else to help our clients, I’m asking them to think about doing something better every day to help us exceed our customers’ expectations, empower our people and enhance the environment.

We do that, in part, by living the values we were founded upon, such as our commitment to integrity, to enhancing our communities, to delivering quality customer service, to keeping our workplaces as safe as possible. For example, I just helped host a conference for our employees who champion safety at their work sites, our Project Safety Team Leaders. We reinforced our safety policies, provided training refreshers, and reminded them safety always comes first. Continuing to prioritize “basics” like safety will allow us to continue to better serve you.

We wish you and your families a safe school year and fall season. In the meantime, thank you for your partnership, and please let us know if you have any comments, feedback or concerns.

Until next time,

Mark A. Lasswell, P.E.
