U.S. EPA selects Traverse City as one of the best

Dec. 10, 2007—The CH2M HILL OMI-operated wastewater facility in Traverse City, Mich., has been chosen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 as one of the best operated and maintained facilities in the Great Lakes region during 2006.

“Nearly no one in the community ever actually sees the millions of gallons of wastewater coming into this plant and the millions of gallons of sparkling clear effluent we release into the Boardman River and Grand Traverse Bay every day,” says CH2M HILL OMI Traverse City Project Manager Scott Blair. “Through this award the public can ‘see’ the work this crew does through the eyes of the MDEQ and EPA, whose business it is to look at our work very closely. We appreciate this recognition.”

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality nominated the Traverse City facility for the award, and Blair accepted the award with his staff on Nov. 28 at an EPA awards presentation.

Earlier this year, CH2M HILL OMI earned a 5-year O&M contract renewal at the Traverse City plant. It has one of the world’s largest membrane bioreactors, which was completed by CH2M HILL and CH2M HILL Constructors Inc. CH2M HILL OMI has been responsible for the O&M processes at the Traverse City plant since 1990. The company also operates Grand Traverse County’s new septage treatment facility.
