Lending a hand to help Habitat for Humanity

Nov. 27, 2007—More than two dozen employees and municipal leaders exchanged laptops and cell phones for hammers and saws on CH2M HILL OMI’s volunteer day for the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, held Nov. 13.

The company invited clients to join in the day-long event, which was planned in conjunction with the largest municipal conference of the year, the National League of Cities’ Congress of Cities.

Following a briefing at Camp Hope, NOAHH’s St. Bernard Parish base, senior vice president Gary Miller presented a $2,000 check to NOAHH executive liaison Catherine Neale. Then the team got to work, installing siding, door frames, window sills, closet shelves, and more at three homes.

NOAHH staff and volunteers have been busy year-round since Hurricane Katrina, building hundreds of new homes in Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard Parishes.

“New Orleans is slowly rebuilding, and it is through the hard work of volunteers that the revitalization is possible,” says NOAHH executive director Jim Pate. “We have an unprecedented goal of building 1,500 houses in five years, and thanks to the work of volunteers, such as the CH2M HILL OMI participants, we’re making great progress toward our goal.”

“We have a goal to be a good corporate citizen in the cities where we live and work. Everyone who participated left with a sense of accomplishment for helping families who suffered such loss in Hurricane Katrina,” says Miller, who helped installing siding on one home.
