CH2M HILL OMI

Commitment to safety
Safety is important to us in everything we do. We conduct our business in a manner that complies with all federal and state standards, provides safe and healthful working conditions for all our associates, and prevents property damage.

We are each directly responsible for ensuring our own safety and the safety of others around us. As such, safety is our priority consideration as we plan and execute work activities. We never knowingly commit unsafe acts, and we never require associates to perform tasks without the proper safety planning and analyses. Associates are the company’s most important asset, so it is our goal that every CH2M HILL OMI associate returns home from work safely every day.

It is our positive safety attitudes, our knowledge of safe practices, and our actions that will determine the success of our safety program. We acknowledge that safety begins with each and every one of us.

Award-winning safety

Spend some time with CH2M HILL OMI people, and you’ll see just how much safety and health matters. Meetings begin with a safety message. Employees wear the right personal protective equipment for the task at hand. Weekly e-mail bulletins provide a variety of safety tips.

These actions and many more ensure that safety remains top-of-mind for every employee, every day. Safety is one of our seven core values, important in every action we take, and our corporate commitment is clear.

CH2M HILL OMI’s well-defined, well-respected safety practices and performance have earned dozens of awards over the years at local, regional and national levels. The enterprise is frequently recognized as well; in fact, in 2007, Occupational Hazards magazine named CH2M HILL to its Top 10 list of “America's Safest Companies.”

Among the elements of our safety and health program:
  • We have a dedicated Corporate Health & Safety Director to provide leadership, information, training, reporting and focus on the importance of safety every day.
  • Our Safety Manual provides written programs and procedures that provide the foundation for a safe and healthful working environment for all employees. The manual advises and informs all employees about their safety responsibilities, serving as a support tool, reference source and basic training guide.
  • Safety performance statistics, days away from work, and other metrics are tracked and acted upon to ensure compliance and focus on safety practices.
  • We communicate the importance of safety frequently and consistently across several platforms, including our weekly e-mail newsletter, our monthly hardcopy newsletter, safety posters and contests, and monthly “safety toolkits.” Each toolkit gives managers information and resources to have a weekly 15-minute safety meeting on a common topic that changes each month.
  • We deliver extensive safety training online and in-person to ensure employees are prepared to address the hazards and situations they may encounter on the job.
  • We reward employees at the project sites who volunteer to be Project Safety Team Leaders and help champion safety practices to their colleagues. PSTLs come together each year as a team to help them become even stronger safety advocates.
  • With the large concentration of employees at the company’s headquarters, we encourage healthy activities through a free, on-site fitness center, nearby walk/run/bike paths, a café with a full salad bar and other healthy menu choices, teambuilding opportunities such as 5K races, and more.
