Our employees are involved in a wide range of volunteer activities every year to help make a positive difference in their communities. Their service efforts not only contribute to healthy communities but also foster greater teamwork, cooperation and problem-solving skills back on the job.
Here are just a few examples of recent projects and philanthropic efforts implemented by CH2M HILL OMI employees.
- Setting a record for Water For People, CH2M HILL OMI people and their colleagues in CH2M HILL raised more than $170,000 in employee contributions to help Water For People, an international nonprofit that increases access to safe drinking water and improves sanitation and health in developing countries. The 2008 fundraising campaign was the company’s most successful to date and set a record for Water For People's most successful workplace giving campaign. CH2M HILL has been a Water For People corporate partner since 1991. In 2007, the firm's employees gave $92,000 to Water For People.
- Since 2005, our Southeast Region team at CH2M HILL OMI has incorporated a community service component its annual regional meeting. They meet in a different partner city every year and choose a project that will benefit the local community. In 2006, for example, employees volunteered to clean up a park in Barnesville, Ga. In 2007, more than 50 employees went to DeFuniak Springs, Fla., to add more amenities to Lake Stanley Park. They installed six new barbecue grills, built two picnic tables, built a new sandbox and added a commemorative bench.
- Two employees in Walla Walla, Wash., teamed up with Junior Achievement of Washington to teach local eighth-grade students about business and entrepreneurship.
- Employees in Grants, N.M., have partnered with Grants Volunteer Fire and Rescue to conduct a "Dictionary Project" since 2005. The project raises money to buy and distribute dictionaries to local third-graders. In 2007, nearly 700 children received free dictionaries. It is part of the national “Dictionary Project” nonprofit program.
- In Oak Ridge, Tenn., employees have adopted a two-mile stretch of highway near their work site, and about 25 employees donate their time every year to help clean up and beautify the roadway. They also began a can collection drive to raise additional money every year to fund their volunteering and donation efforts.
- Employees from our Fort Lupton, Colo., project and our corporate office team up every year to help organize and sponsor the City of Fort Lupton’s annual fundraising golf tournament. The event benefits the Fort Lupton Recreation Center’s youth activities program, which gives teenagers opportunities to participate in sports, educational activities, team-building activities and other events. In 2008, they raised more than $4,000.
- CH2M HILL OMI volunteered to create the H2O Interns Web site for the San Diego County Water Authority and its San Diego Region Water and Wastewater Internships. We launched the site, maintain the site, and pay for the site’s monthly hosting and tracking costs. Our support for the program aligns with our desire to help give back to the water industry by playing a part in educating future water and wastewater professionals.
- In Sandy Springs, Ga., employees sponsored five local children so they could attend the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Camp Kingfisher in summer 2007. The week-long summer day camp shows campers the fun in nature hikes, animal presentations, science experiments and nature games.
- In honor of the 32 people who lost their lives at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, CH2M HILL matched employee gifts to any of the scholarship or memorial funds that were part of the Hokie Spirit fund drive or the Virginia Tech Civil and Environmental Engineering Memorial Education Fund. Employees donated nearly $14,000 and the matching program doubled the total to $28,000. In addition, CH2M HILL made a four-year commitment to underwrite a program that will bring recognized experts in civil engineering to Virginia Tech. CH2M HILL OMI people also participate with the CH2M HILL enterprise in research partnerships with the Virginia Tech Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. The research is advancing the greater body of knowledge of the water and wastewater fields.
- Since 2005, CH2M HILL OMI has sponsored the production and printing of the quarterly newsletter for Children’s House in Fayetteville, Ark., which provides a safe, secure place for children to overcome the devastating effects of abuse and neglect. Employees have also donated their time to paint and maintain the facilities, and volunteered to design new fundraising materials and media kits to help promote Children's House during National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
